What happened at Jesus' Baptism?

The Holy Spirit

Every Christian has God's Holy Spirit in his heart (Romans 5:5). This happens when Jesus baptises us with the Holy Spirit (Mark 1:8). The Holy Spirit helps us to live the way God wants us to live - this even applies to Jesus himself - for example, in Mark 1:12 the Holy Spirit made Jesus go into the desert.



The Holy Spirit is a person and is fully God. We cannot see him, because he does not have a body, but he is spirit. The Bible says he is like the wind - we cannot see him, but we do see his effects in our lives (John 3:8).

Mark 1:12-13 Jesus tempted by Satan.

This is a comparison or a play on words. Fishermen "bring in" or "catch" fish. In a similar way, Jesus' helpers will "catch" or "bring in" people. What does "bring in people" mean:

Review: what has happened so far? (Mark 1:1-20)



The book of Mark is about Jesus who is the S _ _ _ _ G _ _ (verse 1). Before Jesus started his work, John the _ _ _ _ _ _ _ (verse 4) let people know that someone (taller/ younger/ more powerful) (verse 7 - pick the correct one) than he was coming. This person who was coming was Jesus. John said that Jesus would baptise people with the H _ _ y _ p _ r _ _ (verse 8).



John the Baptist baptised Jesus in the river J _ _ _ _ _ (verse 9). After this Jesus went into the desert and was _ _ _ _ _ _ by Satan for 40 days (verses 12-13).

Jesus lived in Israel.



Look at the map of the world and point out the continents/countries: Australia, Africa, South America, United States of America. Point out the country where you were born.



Now find Israel. What are some other countries, cities and seas near Israel?



Look at the map of the Roman Empire when Jesus was on earth (page 100-101). Point out Judea (South Israel). Where are the countries which are now called Italy, Greece, Spain, France and England?



Look at the map of Israel. Find:

When did this happen?



These things that we are reading about happened in about the year 30 AD. This is about _, _ _ _ years ago. This seems a long time ago, but if people live to about 70 years of age, it is only about the length of 28 lifetimes.



When we say 30 AD, the AD stands for Anno Domini which is Latin for 'year of our Lord'. We count our years from the year of Jesus' birth. So this means that Jesus was about _ _ years old when these things took place.



Other things were happening in the world when Jesus was on earth. In China, it was the period of the Han Dynasty (202BC - 220 AD). Do you know what was happening in your country of birth when Jesus was on earth?





Mark 1:21-28 Jesus casts out an Evil Spirit.



(1) Read verses 21-22 slowly. Could you pronounce each of the words correctly?



(2) Where did Jesus go? ____________. His disciples went with him. Who do you think his disciples were?



(3) The Sabbath is the Jewish day of _ _ _ _. It is a bit like our Sunday, when we go to church.

Jesus Heals Many People (Mark 1:29-39)



(1) Find Mark 1:29-39.



(2) Read the heading. The heading summarises what the next few verses are about.
