SYDNEY LIFE

INTRODUCTION

Sydney isn't paradise, but it isn't bad either - compared to a lot of other places. It has the same sort of unemployment, crime, greed and trashy television that most big cities have, but with at least some degree of moderation. It's not trendy like London, crazy like LA, glitzy like New York or romantic like Paris, but it has a rough and tumble character all of its own. Of course it also has a diversity of character, in both its people and places, that belies any attempt to label anything as being typically 'Sydney'.

That it, unless you count the suburbs - and there are a lot to count. Very few people live in or immediately around central Sydney. Most live in the suburban sprawl that extends for several miles/kilometres north, west and south. And with suburban living comes the usual things that increasingly typify the Australian populace in general - the family, the car, the house and backyard, or the unit (apartment), with its radio, television and VCR. Add some generally bland cooking (or takeaway food), lots of beer and an almost unhealthy amount of sport and you wouldn't be far removed from the typical Australian lifestyle. The word 'culture' may be stretching the mark, but it isn't a bad life. Especially if you don't know anything better - or worse.
