What is The Funds Management Program?

This writing is based on the official book titled: Faculty of Commerce + Economics, Postgraduate Coursework Programs 1999, UNSW.

The Funds Management provides a strong applied and theoretical grounding in all aspects of the financial services industries. The program is designed to provide depth required for successful placement and career advancement in the financial services industry, with emphasis on positions in investment analysis in the industry.

The aim of the program is to provide all students with a solid understanding of the environment and decision processes in which investment analysis and portfolio management occurs and advanced and applied knowledge in a range of critical aspects of investment analysis, such as security design and selection, portfolio allocation decisions and risk management.

What are the contents of the program?

The funds management is a fixed program consisting of 10 subjects plus one elective subject:

The core subjects of Master of Commerce Program: (my first session)

The core subjects of Funds Management specialization (currently studied):

  • Financial Markets and Institution
  • Security Valuation and Portfolio Selection
  • Capital Budgeting and Financial Decisions

Studied later:

  • Applied Portfolio Management and Modelling
  • Derivatives and Risk Management Techniques
  • Advanced Investment and Funds Management
  • Applied Funds Management
  • International Corporate Finance

What does the program emphasize on?

Given the increasing globalization of financial markets and the increasing use of off-shore investment instruments in portfolios, the program emphasises both the standards and practices relevant to current Australian financial services and the distinctions that occur in the wider global environment.

What makes the program difference?

As opposed to traditional pedagogical approaches, the program's emphasis is on the ability to both understand and apply sophisticated investment techniques used in the industry and engendering the judgment required to determine the appropriate approach to evaluating specific situations in investment analysis.

The teaching method will draw on industry participation and speakers to ensure that the materials is relevant both academically and practically.
