synopsis

Children love hearing stories and good stories for generations have opened hearts and minds to our common humanity and our common dreams for peace. Peace-building stories possess a special magic of their own that when shared with children can seed a myriad of ideas and possibilities for all kinds of different and creative teaching and learning opportunities. The stories present ways in which we can all work together to create peace with ourselves, with each other and with the environment and to move beyond the prevailing, limited definitions of peace. Peace affects every aspect of our living and being and at no other time in history is more relevant to our future existence upon the earth.

The guide presents ideas for using peace-building stories with middle to upper primary school students and early secondary level students who then might be motivated to create their own peace-building stories. Peace-building especially involves working for win-win and nonviolent resolutions to problems needing solving but it requires creative and imaginative thinkers willing to embark upon new and peaceful ways of living and being. It is a non-prescriptive guide that invites creative thinking and seeks to build a peace-building consciousness within our classrooms and schools and beyond. Examples of children’s stories are also presented.

There is another free peace-building activities guide available.

Hassaun Ali Jones-Bey's story How Paper and Ink Came Together and Survived to Sing About It is a unique story of hope that has been brilliantly crafted and invites many wonderful peace-building possibilities. Activities have been developed to reflect Gardner's Multiple Intelligences. The guide is also available for teachers to use. Please also e-mail info@tlpeace.org.au with your suggestions and recommendations. It is suitable for children from ages 7 to 15. It is recommended that you read or hear his story on CD first.
