Greens Councillor Margaret Woodsmith Elected Deputy Mayor at Randwick City Council

home

At last night's Randwick City Council meeting Greens Councillor Margaret Woodsmith was elected Deputy Mayor. Liberal Bruce-Notley-Smith was elected Mayor.

The three Greens Councillors have advocated a four year sharing arrangement between the three political parties in which two years for the Liberals will be balanced by one year for the Greens and one year for Labor.

The intent of this is to ensure that the Greens do not alienate either of the other two parties out of the decision making. We believe that this approach was favorably received by the local community during the last Council period (2004-2008).

The Labor Councillors have at various times over the last three weeks proposed two years for the Greens and two years for Labor. The Liberals had initially proposed three years for themselves and one year for the Greens but had come to accept that they would only get two. They have also at times proposed two years for themselves and two for the Greens.

Last night just before the meeting Labor offered one of the Liberal Councillors three years and (as it is understood) either one year for themselves or one year for an independent.

It is further understand that the anointed Liberal candidate (Notley-Smith) was not to stand under the terms of the Labor offer. The approached Liberal Councillor rejected the offer.
