Uranium Enrichment: Why So Shocked Peter?

uranium miner Peter Garret has described as “genuinely shocking and alarming
news” his discovery that a private company is planning to enrich uranium in
Australia (ABC Online 15th June)
Garret
may be expressing shock but he of all people would have known that it was only
a matter of time.
The
industry has advocated a domestic uranium enrichment industry for years –
certainly since the 1980’s when Peter was in the Nuclear Disarmament Party.
Garret
says that the discovery of the enrichment company "raises such a high number of very serious questions about
what the Howard Government's plans are for the nuclear industry in
Australia."
There
is actually very little doubt about Howard’s nuclear plans. The man wants to
expand the nuclear industry and should be stopped.
The
really serious question should be directed to Garret. Why is it OK to export
Australian Uranium knowing that it will be enriched overseas, but not OK to
enrich the same uranium in Australia?
