Local Greens Hail Wilderness Society Win Over Gunns

Greens Councillor Murray Matson has welcomed this week’s news that The Wilderness Society has won its’ legal battle with Gunns Ltd and been awarded $350,000 in damages.

Gunns was seeking $3.5 million from the action it launched against The Wilderness Society four years ago.

Cr Matson, who was arrested at the Wilderness Society’s historic Franklin River blockade in the 1980’s, stated on Friday,

“The win is a victory for the right of our community to protest in support of the Australian environment against corporate power. Gunn’s nasty legal action was all about silencing people prepared to stand up to it.”
