State Election: Declining Oil Supplys Demand Answers
Experts
believe that global oil production has peaked and is expected to decline from
now on.
Randwick
City Council will call on both the Premier and opposition leader to reveal how
they plan to adapt Sydney to coping with restricted oil supplies.
The
motion put by Greens Deputy Mayor Murray Matson wants answers prior to the
March state election.
Cr
Matson said last week,
“In
2005, for the first time that global oil production was higher than the amount
of new oil reserves discovered. The days of cheap oil in Sydney are over. Our
would-be political leaders should explain how they are going to reduce Sydney’s
oil dependency.”
Local
Green candidates who have made some suggestions as to how NSW could deal with
increasing oil shortages.
Greens
candidate for Maroubra Anne Gardiner urges the State Government to proceed with
Randwick Council’s proposed light rail link from UNSW to the CBD. She believes
that it should be extended to Maroubra Junction and says,
“NSW
should implement Randwick City Council’s proposed light rail line to UNSW and
extend it to Maroubra Junction. It was the State Government that wanted urban
consolidation in Maroubra Junction. Now they should provide the best
sustainable transport system to service this growing area.”
Greens
candidate for Coogee Kelly Marks has also called for light rail links to
Coogee, Bronte and Bondi.
She
elaborated,
“The
old tram system worked well for the Eastern suburb Beaches. A modern light rail
system to Coogee, Bronte and Bondi would be the perfect solution to traffic
congestion and contribute to reducing Sydney’s oil dependency. The time to
begin is now.”
