Those Pesky ALT codes

Back to Index

Many times I see strange characters in emails and postings and wondered where they came from. Easy, it's the ALT codes. Get any of the characters in the table below by using the ALT key (Win keyboard) and use the numeric pad in numeric lock. Hold ALT down while you type the sequence of numbers, then release ALT to get the character displayed. For some codes nothing happened for that code (or maybe it was a space?). Here's a PDF of the most useful ones to print  for a help sheet http://www.usefulshortcuts.com/downloads/ALT-Codes.pdf  Another excellent page is here http://tlt.its.psu.edu/suggestions/international/accents/codealt.html   If you need the full exploration of the codes then the table below may help.
