Cathy Gibson - The Songwriter

Cathy Gibson

My song writing developed out of writing poetry. I realized that autobiographical material can be made into songs, and then even sung. It can be absolutely personal, can be a letter to a dear friend or lover or enemy; can stab someone in the back, though that usually backfires. A pep talk, a spiritual treatise, deep & meaningful, totally shallow; a thumb nail sketch of a character; about chocolate, cars, sex, beginnings, middles and endings of liaisons, as everyone knows. The personal is political.

Sometimes I wonder why I and other songwriters write so much about love, and its triumphs, but mostly its disappointments - some of my conclusions are: its therapy; it takes your mind off work, real life, responsibilities, or passes the time on those innumerable evenings which would otherwise be spent watching television or surfing the internet or chatting or playing computer games, going to the pub or doing homework or studying for immanent exams.

If I could I'd be playing in a hot band, but it seems that my music, with its emphasis on lyric, is more at home with a listening audience, than a dancing one. But I'm interested in collaborating with dance music writers, in exploring new rhythms and rhymes and contexts for my songs.

In fact, I would like to co-write more often, and also to make contact with entertainers and singers and bands who may be looking for new songs.

I have a 4 track CD, "Not A Desperado", for sale by mail order, and through record shops (see below), and a demo CD, which I can make available on request. This is also true of my 17 song album cassette, which I made in 1992.
